Only found out once Jerome was here at the hospice center that Medicare will cover up to a five-day stay for your LO at a hospice center for respite services. Never knew that or I might have taken advantage, especially after experiencing this particular hospice center. So if your LO has Medicare, be aware that you have this option.

And I think you can get this 5-day respite care benefit every 6 months.

And VA can give you one week of respite care every 90 days

We have VA respite care choices of 6 hrs. a day 30 days a year or two weeks a year. My question is when we use hospice, which I haven't called about yet, is that care in addition to VA care or are you pretty much under hospice only? Or again does that vary from state to state? We are in Texas.

Post subject:  VA and Hospice

I was told I could have Hospice [when we are ready] and it will have nothing to do with the VA services of aid and attendance. That's what I was told by the young man who first came to sign us up. However, I am finding out that VA services are as different all over the country as Lewy Body itself!

So true! We had VA home services in addition to hospice. They actually co-ordinated their schedules so we had someone here everyday ...except weekends, the final few weeks. So even though those visits were short as were hospices, at least we had a professional checking on my hubby daily.

Could you explain a little more how this Medicare option works? Is it under the Hospice coverage portion? Not quite clear to me how one is eligible for this.
Thanks

does the patient have to be "immoble"? i tried to get hospice for my husband and they said he was not elligible because he was still mobile.
that's the reason i need some help! he's too mobile at night and won't sleep...therefore i don't sleep. thanks

No, plenty of people that are still walking are accepted into hospice.

You might try a different hospice organization.

Your husband's mobility could be a proxy for the fact that he hasn't declined enough to warrant hospice's help.
